LED Wall Project

This was a fun class project I did practice filming with a background plate on an LED wall. The goal of the project was to help us gain experience using lighting to help the immersion. For my project I went with more of a space themed background that had one main source of light which allowed me to keep the frame a little darker with just that single source of light illuminating it.

I also wanted to challenge myself further and I decided to utilize a camera package and lenses I had not used before. For this project I went with a Sony F5 which is an older cinema camera that has a global shutter and the ability to use genlock which is helpful for filming on an LED wall as the global shutter nearly eliminates any scan lines and usually most of the flickering from the wall and the camera not being synced. If I wanted to be sure both the wall and the camera were in perfect sync I could of utilized genlock which will sync the wall and the camera to make sure they are at the same frequencies. I didn’t end up needing to do that as the global shutter eliminated most of the issues and it worked well.

Since using a new camera and filming on an LED wall for the first time wasn’t enough for me. I also decided to utilize anamorphic lenses which were something I had never used prior to the shoot. I was familiar enough with the concept of them and how they worked that I was confident I would be able to utilize them for this project. Even though it made it a little more difficult, I felt that the end product was pretty solid and I liked the anamorphic look. The Sony F5 also impressed me. It is an older camera but I actually prefer its look compared to the newer FX platform of the FX3 and FX6. To me the FX3 and the FX6 just feel too sharp and I much preferred the softer look of the F5 which combined with the characteristics of anamorphic lenses made the shots feel very cinematic.
